Uses of the novelty metrics proposed by Shah <i>et al.</i>: what emerges from the literature?

Abstract Several concepts and types of procedures for assessing novelty related exist in the literature. Among them, two approaches originally proposed by Shah colleagues are often considered scholars. These metrics rely on well-defined a specific concept novelty; however, more than 20 years after first publication, it is still not clear whether to what extent these actually used, why they used how. Through comprehensive review papers citing main work Shah, Vargas-Hernandez &amp; Smith (2003a, 2003b) (the study where comprehensively described applied), present aims bridge this gap. The results highlight that only few use assessment approach et al. nonnegligible number uses modified or adapted version original metrics. Furthermore, several criticalities application have been uncovered, which expected provide relevant information scholars involved reliable repeatable assessments.
